Kayaking, in particular, has become a popular way for locals to get a workout while enjoying the outdoors.
Vessel Types
Each vessel type offers adventurers a different unique experience.
Kayaks: Known for their stability and maneuverability, kayaks are a popular choice for both beginners and experienced paddlers. They're great for exploring narrow waterways and getting a closer look at the shoreline. * Available at both Lake Reba and Owsley Fork.
Canoes: Perfect for groups or families, canoes offer ample space for gear and additional passengers. They're stable and easy to paddle, making them a great option for leisurely outings. * Only available at Owsley Fork
Paddleboards: For a unique challenge and a full-body workout, try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). It's a fun way to improve balance and enjoy a different perspective of the water. * Only available at Owsley Fork
Safety First
Whether you're paddling alone or with others, safety should always be a priority. Here are some important and essential tips:
Life Jackets: Always wear a properly fitted life jacket, regardless of your swimming ability. This is a legal requirement in Kentucky and a crucial safety measure.
Weather Check: Check the weather forecast before heading out. Avoid paddling in thunderstorms or high winds.
Buddy System: Paddle with a friend or let someone know your plans, including your estimated return time.
Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially on hot days.
Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Watch out for other boats, obstacles, and changes in water conditions.
Children's Safety: State law requires that children always wear life jackets and be closely supervised by an adult.
